A Message from Our Chancellor

March 20, 2003

Members,
UC Riverside Campus Community

Dear Colleagues:

Our nation is now engaged in military action against Iraq. The war is likely to create anxiety, hostility and distress, particularly if family members or friends have been called to military duty or have ties to Iraq or other Middle Eastern countries. And as citizens of an increasingly interconnected world, we are all affected by global events. We all hope and pray for a quick resolution of this conflict and a lasting peace.

The UCR campus provides needed support to all its community members. Students have available health, counseling, academic support, and other services, including specialized services for international students and scholars and military reservists. Employees have access to the employee assistance program and other services. The campus is preparing an integrated website that will provide links to these many services.

Whatever our opinions about the events that are unfolding, we must remember that vital communities such as UCR draw strength from understanding and respect for others. As we engage in vigorous debate and the exchange of perspectives, drawing on the scholarly and professional expertise of students, faculty, staff, and community members, we have a responsibility to provide an atmosphere in which free and thoughtful discourse leads toward greater understanding. UCR serves as a beacon of tolerance and respect, and as a sanctuary for the free exchange of ideas. While we may not always agree with one another's opinions, we must be vigilant in ensuring that those opinions can be expressed freely and peacefully. We expect that everyone will be treated fairly and respectfully and will not be the target of hatred or bias.

As other communities and organizations have been doing, we have also been reviewing our campus situation to ensure that we have taken every precaution to protect the safety and security of this campus community. These efforts and related resources are summarized on the website www.ehs.ucr.edu/programs/em.

It is more important than ever that the UCR community work together and serve as a source of support and inspiration for one another. I appreciate your continuing efforts to ensure we remain an open, tolerant, and peaceful community.

I look forward to welcoming you back to campus for spring quarter.

Sincerely,

France A. Córdova
Chancellor
